Welcome to San Francisco University High School! UHS is a special community, well-known for its challenging academic offerings and intellectual vitality. Our classrooms are full of spirited debate; our labs are spaces for collaborative discovery; and our studios, stages, and playing fields are arenas where we create and compete with passion and purpose. We believe that a lively academic culture, while the foundation of our mission, represents only one facet of an extraordinary school. Strong student and faculty relationships, a culture of peer support, students assuming leadership in all aspects of school life, and active service in the community beyond our campus are essential aspects of the UHS experience. The standards we set for ourselves are high, but the benefits of those aspirations are limitless in a school that believes in the promise of every student.

One of UHS’s greatest assets is our urban location, allowing us direct access to one of the most vibrant and inspiring cities in the world. San Francisco offers endless ways to enrich our classes and service projects—from studying marine life on Ocean Beach to taking in a new exhibit at SFMOMA to serving lunch at St. Anthony’s to tutoring middle-school students at University’s very own Summerbridge program.

And just as we treasure the Bay Area community beyond our campus walls, we constantly seek to cultivate the bonds we form right here at UHS. Our signature ninth-grade mentoring program provides students with connection and attention from trained faculty laying an early foundation for success and confidence in their first year of high school life.

Another crucial thread in the fabric of UHS is, undoubtedly, the spirit imbued in every member of our community. Connecting students across grade levels, our twice-weekly All-School Meeting brings us together for memorable performances, fascinating guest speakers, and the always-hilarious Battle of the Classes. And our Red Devils relish the opportunity to cheer one another on at games both home and away, filling sidelines, grandstands, and the bleachers of our very own Devil Dome with a spirit second to none.

When I first arrived at UHS, the two words I used to describe what I was experiencing were “authentic engagement.” I trust our website conveys that authenticity and passion, as well as the palpable warmth and enthusiasm of our dynamic community of students, faculty, parents, and alumni. I hope that you’ll come for a visit and witness our school in action. We look forward to showing you around campus, and giving you insight into the unparalleled curriculum and joyful learning environment that we are so proud to offer.

About Julia

Julia Russell Eells is entering the 35th year of her career in independent education.  Before coming to University High School, Julia was the head at Lincoln School in Providence, RI, from 2005–2013. Her initial focus at Lincoln was the launch of a new strategic plan, which in 2007 led to a highly successful $11 million capital campaign that included a $5 million campus-wide capital improvements program. During her tenure, she also established the Center for Peace, Equity, and Justice Through Service to deepen the context of the school’s commitment to community service.

With a BA from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and an MA from Wesleyan University, Julia has held positions as the assistant director of admissions at Hobart and William Smith, director of college counseling at the Ethel Walker School (CT), and dean of admission and college counseling at Miss Porter’s School (CT). In 2000, Julia became the assistant head of school at Westminster School (CT).

Julia was a member of the executive committee of the Board of the National Coalition of Girls’ Schools, and has served as a trustee on the Boards of St. Michael’s School (RI) and Community Preparatory School (RI). She currently serves on the Board of the California Teacher Development Collaborative.

Our Mission

University High School welcomes students of demonstrated motivation and ability to engage in an education that fosters responsibility and the spirited pursuit of knowledge. We are a school where adults believe in the promise of every student, and together we work to build and sustain a community of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and talents. UHS challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose larger than the self.
