Health and Wellness
Hello, and welcome to University High School's Health and Wellness webpage. My primary role at UHS is to provide support to students. I am available to meet with students during the school day on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Students can schedule appointments or drop in on an as-need basis. Parents are always welcome to call with questions or concerns, or to schedule an appointment.
In addition to counseling, I work with a team of adults and peer advisors to educate students about their socio-emotional, physical, and mental well-being. All students are encouraged to check in with me—at UHS, we see it as a sign of health to talk about feelings and to know when and how to ask for help.
Student health and wellness is a priority and as such, one of the requirements for our freshmen and sophomores is to meet with me for a “wellness check-in.” The “wellness check-in” is one of many ways we ensure that students know they have caring adults in this community available to them. There are many people and programs at UHS dedicated to the well-being of both the students and the community as a whole. This webpage is one of the many resources available to you.
Spreading the Word
There are many ways health information is shared at UHS. Each month, the Health Bulletin Board addresses a different topic picked by our senior peer advisors and throughout the year, we use cluster time to have thoughtful discussions about health and wellness as it relates to the UHS community. Additionally, we have developed thoughtful and informative health programming for each grade level at various times during the year.
Students are surrounded by a support team that consists of their advisor, class dean, director of health and wellness, dean of students, and academic dean. Through careful coordination of efforts, this team works carefully to support each student as he/she grows academically, emotionally, and socially.
Typical Issues That Students Face Include:
Ninth-Grade Year: support with transitional issues relating to friendships, developing study skills and time management habits, helping students get to know each other, introducing good decision-making skills that relate to socializing and drug/alcohol use, and balancing commitments.
Sophomore Year: support with changing friendships/social groups, more information about drug/alcohol use and decision-making, intimate relationship support, communication skill development, and general teen health education.
Junior and Senior Year: support with differentiation from parents and friends, college application support, relationship issues, negotiating boundaries, communication with parents/peers, and transitioning to college.
