With great pride, we announce that our own University High School Red Devils have once again been chosen as a State Athletic School of the year by CalHi Sports! Our Red Devils were chosen as the Division IV State School of the Year because of the broad-based success of many teams on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. There are over 1500 high schools in California, and only five are recognized with this honor each year.

Athletic Director Jim Ketcham said, “This was such an unusual year, and it honestly was a huge success just having our teams get to play at all. But, the fact that over 250 of our students participated in the Red Devil Athletic Academy before sports were allowed to start and the commitment, persistence, and passion they displayed to make the most of even very short seasons is really the story here. Every single Red Devil athlete can feel proud of this award. I also want to highlight our coaches, who were truly heroic in being there for the school and their teams. They did not have to say yes, but they did, and we should all appreciate them for that.”

CalHi Sports announcement highlighted many Red Devil team accomplishments, including “boys basketball (No. 1 in final D4 state rankings with wins over St. Ignatius and Piedmont); boys soccer (9-0-2 record and No. 1 in D4 computer rankings in the CIF North Coast Section); baseball (13-2 record & top 10 in final D5 state rankings); and boys & girls cross country (won league titles and would have both been among the favorites to win CIF D5 state titles.

In addition, our Red Devils had teams in girls basketball, girls volleyball, girls soccer, and girls track that was ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in D4 or D5 in the NCS by the MaxPreps computer.

Finally, there were the two Red Devil boys and girls tennis teams. The boys, who have won the last two NCS D2 titles, posted a 16-0 record. The girls were 9-1 with some big non-league wins.”

State Schools of the Year by divisions have been compiled since 1997. This is University’s 7th such honor, by far the most of any small school in California.  University last won this award in 2018.

Congratulations to all our athletes, our coaches, our athletics staff, and our entire community!
