Advanced Choir

From the UHS Advanced Choir

Advanced Choir presents three pieces:

Six, from Six the Musical — a new show about the six wives of King Henry VIII; The Parting Glass, a traditional Scottish ballad; and Other Worlds Revealed, by contemporary composer Meredith Monk.

(1) Six

Six is a new musical written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. The work, which debuted in the 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and came to London's West End in 2019, tells the story of the six wives of King Henry VIII and reclaims their story in an electric, catchy, girl-band pop aesthetic. This features the infinitely-talented sopranos and altos of Advanced Choir.

(2) The Parting Glass

The Parting Glass is a stunning, simple tune haling from Scotland. This particular arrangement was made famous by The Wailin’ Jennys, a Canadian trio with silky parallel harmonies. This one features the tenors and basses, who recorded this just beautifully.

(3) Other Worlds Revealed

This is Meredith Monk's "Other Worlds Revealed" from ATLAS, and it’s one of the very first things we did together post Shelter-In-Place.

From our living rooms via Zoom, we attempted a version of the piece. Using the piece as a vessel for connecting was especially rewarding because we were able to incorporate a live element of cueing the next person to sing (using sticky notes), which is unlike many other virtual choir pieces. They are usually made quite individually, and there’s a necessary element of community that is lacking and sad in the remote music-making environment.

In quarantine, there is no choir. But thanks to this piece, we were able to seek out a little connection.
