The UHS Theatre Department Tribute to the Class of 2021
James, Ryan, Susannah, Joel, (and Michelle, and Natalie, and Beth, and Jon, and Dave M, and Erin, and
Elle, and Matt, and Caela, and Tammy) wish to profusely thank this graduating class of musicians, technicians, designers, choreographers, composers, dancers, actors, and theatre/virtual performance makers.
We can’t believe how quickly these four years have gone, and how much you’ve grown – and evolved – in such a short time. Your endless curiosity, your bravery, your hunger to learn more, your drive and work ethic, your generosity, creativity, and ambition – and a deep sense of caring for the UHS Theatre Department and the sacredness of the space and each other – astounds us.
A special note to the class of 2021 in the age of Distance Learning and Remote Theatre Making: your flexibility, adaptiveness, and continued passion for the art of making art – including and especially in uncertain times – bodes well for the future of theatre making, but also, for the future of humanity. In the Theatre Department, we tell stories and connect to our community. Your resilience, as you learned, before our very eyes, how to tell the story and connect to your community by whatever means possible, and in the face of distance and isolation from your theatre peers and your theater space for over a year, is more than inspiring. It is life affirming.
We wish you long, fruitful, boundary-busting, glass-ceiling shattering, binary-breaking, reifying, avantgarde lives filled with art – with dynamic spatial relationships and kinesthetic response – with theatre making and theatre going, and possibly even theatre teaching.
Remember:
Less war, more love.
Listen deeply, respond truly.
Everything connects to everything – the little things make the big happen.
Don’t sweat the small stuff.
Mean what you say and say what you mean.
Support the event on stage.
Make your partner look good.
Share the story with your audience, your community.
Don’t get derailed when things go wrong.
Get the note that you’ve gone too far.
Be generous, always.
Trust the process.
