Alena Koay serves as the Athletic Trainer at University High School

Alena Koay joined University High School in 2023 and serves as the school's certified athletic trainer, providing injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and return-to-play support for Red Devil student-athletes. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of La Verne and received her Board of Certification (BOC) credential in 2019.

Before coming to UHS, Koay worked as a certified athletic trainer at Workman High School and Rowland High School through Casa Colina Hospital. She also worked with Pomona-Pitzer Athletics at the NCAA Division III level, providing coverage for Women's Soccer, Men's Basketball, Track & Field, Rugby, Men's Tennis, Women's Water Polo, and Women's Lacrosse. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she had the opportunity to train basketball athletes ranging from high school players to overseas professionals, focusing on athletic performance through biomechanics, mobility, and injury prevention strategies.

Koay's approach to athletic training centers on long-term recovery and wellness. She believes that mobility, strength, and biomechanics are the foundation of both injury prevention and athletic performance. By understanding sport-specific movements and the physical demands placed on athletes throughout a season, she emphasizes individualized care that helps student-athletes maintain peak performance while minimizing wear and tear on the body.

What Koay enjoys most about UHS is getting to know students beyond their sport. She appreciates that UHS student-athletes are well-rounded and multi-talented individuals—whether they are musicians, mathematicians, bakers, or leaders in other pursuits. She believes in treating each student as a whole person, understanding the smaller details that help create the bigger picture of their health and well-being.

Outside of the Athletic Training Room, Koay enjoys staying active by playing basketball, lifting weights, and running through Golden Gate Park. She also loves cooking and baking whenever she has the time.

Carin Marrs serves as the Student/Coach Support Representative at University High School

Carin Marrs began running in eighth grade after participating in several sports, including competitive basketball. During her freshman year of high school, she decided to focus entirely on cross country and track and field, a decision that shaped both her athletic and coaching career. Her proudest moment as an athlete came during her senior year when she won the individual state cross country title while helping her team capture the state championship.

After competing collegiately, Marrs returned to her alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach and quickly discovered her passion for coaching. After one season as an assistant, she became head coach of the program, leading teams that won three Cross Country, three Indoor Track, and one Outdoor Track state championships.

Marrs joined University High School in 2013, succeeding legendary coach Jim Tracy, the winningest coach in California state history. Since then, UHS Cross Country and Track & Field has captured three state championships (Boys Cross Country in 2017 and 2025 and Girls Cross Country in 2021), along with 21 NCS titles and 38 BCL West/Central championships.

While the championships are special, Marrs is most proud of the athletes whose growth never makes it onto banners. She takes pride in helping student-athletes believe in themselves through challenging weeks, months, and even years when results don't come easily. Whether it's a runner who goes from the back of the pack to scoring on a state podium team, freshmen who commit to one another and become state champions, or students who discover a lifelong love for running, Marrs measures success by the confidence and resilience her athletes develop.

Her coaching philosophy centers on attitude, effort, and execution. She emphasizes the process over outcomes, teaching athletes to embrace physical, mental, and emotional discomfort as opportunities for growth. She strives to create an environment where every athlete feels safe to take risks and knows they are valued regardless of results.

At UHS, Marrs has embraced the unique opportunities that come with coaching at a small school, from balancing students' many commitments to sharing Kezar Stadium with other programs throughout San Francisco. She believes these experiences foster perspective, community, and an appreciation for the larger track and field family.

Above all, Marrs hopes her athletes leave UHS with a lifelong love for running and the confidence to pursue challenges long after graduation. The UHS Cross Country and Track & Field programs welcome athletes of all experience levels—the only requirements are simple: show up, work hard, and support one another.

John Byrnes brings a strong foundation of sports leadership to University High School, with eight years of coaching youth baseball and four years coaching flag football, including the last three years leading the UHS Boys Flag Football program. His coaching perspective is rooted in his own experiences as a high school football and baseball player, allowing him to connect with student-athletes and help them maximize both their athletic experience and personal growth.

At UHS, Byrnes helped build and now oversees a comprehensive boys flag football program that serves approximately 50 student-athletes across multiple teams. What began as a new initiative six years ago has developed into a structured and competitive program centered on skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership. Over the past decade, he has had the opportunity to coach and mentor hundreds of young athletes throughout the local sports community.

While he is proud of the program's growth, Byrnes finds the greatest reward in seeing athletes successfully transition into high school sports and apply the lessons they learn through athletics to their academic and personal lives. His coaching philosophy is holistic, collaborative, and player-centered. He believes in meeting athletes where they are and helping them build on their individual physical and mental strengths. For Byrnes, youth sports are one of the best environments for character development, where resilience, accountability, and teamwork become lifelong habits.

What stands out most to Byrnes about coaching at UHS is how seamlessly athletics aligns with the school's broader commitment to character and personal growth. He values being part of a community where sports are viewed as an extension of the classroom and where student-athletes are driven, curious, and thoughtful in their approach to both competition and learning.

Outside of coaching, Byrnes has spent much of his professional career working with startups and founders, helping companies raise capital and grow. He enjoys that work for many of the same reasons he loves coaching: building teams, developing people, and working together toward a common goal.

Alex Struthers serves as the Head Women's Flag Football Coach at University High School. He began his coaching career as an assistant flag football coach at the high school level before advancing into leadership roles as Defensive Coordinator for the Golden State Storm of the Women's National Football Conference (WNFC) and Defensive Coordinator for the Golden State Storm Flag Team.

Throughout his career, Struthers has coached at numerous tackle and flag football camps, specializing in defensive development while helping athletes build confidence, discipline, and football IQ. His experience includes working with women's professional tackle football athletes and contributing to a coaching staff recognized with WNFC All-Pro Coach honors in 2026.

At the high school level, Struthers helped transform the Amador Valley High School flag football program from a 1-11 record to a 7-4 season. His coaching philosophy is straightforward: put in the work every day, stay dedicated, and the results will follow.

Struthers brings a unique perspective to UHS through his experience coaching both women's professional football and high school athletes. He believes that dedicated student-athletes thrive when challenged in a competitive environment and is committed to helping UHS players reach the next level both on and off the field.

Outside of football, Struthers has a strong interest in technology, programming, and computer hardware.

Anthony Wong-Orantes brings more than eight years of coaching experience working with athletes ages 8–18 across club and high school volleyball. He played volleyball for 10 years, including at the NCAA Division I level at Long Beach State, and later coached two years of Division I volleyball at Long Beach State and Saint Mary’s College.

As a coach, Anthony has helped build and develop top high school boys’ volleyball programs while earning seven gold medals at Junior Nationals. His coaching philosophy centers on getting the best out of each athlete while building strong, connected teams. He believes that developing young athletes goes beyond the court and focuses on helping players become mature, responsible adults.

Anthony believes being a good person starts off the court and carries onto it. He also values the resources and opportunities available to student-athletes at University High School and understands that building a successful, lasting program takes time.

Outside of volleyball, Anthony enjoys exploring nature and traveling the world. He is passionate about learning about the Earth, different cultures, animals, and the many ways people and living things are both diverse and connected.

Randal Bessolo has led the University High School Boys Basketball program since the 2005-06 season, building one of the premier high school basketball programs in Northern California. During his tenure, the Red Devils have won more than 500 games, averaging 25 wins per season, along with 17 BCL West League Championships, 5 NCS Championships, and 2 NorCal Championships. UHS has been ranked the top team in San Francisco multiple times and consistently ranks among California's top programs, regularly competing with and defeating some of the state's traditional powerhouses.

Before arriving at UHS, Bessolo spent more than 26 years coaching club basketball in Chicago and San Francisco. Throughout his coaching career, he has mentored more than 150 student-athletes who have gone on to compete at the collegiate level, with several advancing to professional careers in the NBA and NFL.

A standout athlete himself, Bessolo was an All-Southern California player at The Thacher School before continuing his basketball career at Columbia University, where he also served as a coach in the Ivy League. He is the Co-Founder and President of the Bay Area Basketball Coaches Association and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Bessolo's accomplishments have earned widespread recognition, including CalHiSports Division III State Coach of the Year (2019), NorCalPreps NorCal Coach of the Year (2023), and recognition as a Positive Coaching Alliance Honoree.

At the heart of the program is a simple philosophy: have fun and build lifelong friendships. Bessolo believes that when players genuinely enjoy the experience and care for one another, winning follows naturally. The results at UHS have consistently proven that approach successful. The "Runnin' Red Devils" play fast, tough, prepared, and with joy. He emphasizes that team chemistry, character, and collective commitment can overcome talent alone, and UHS student-athletes continually embrace that challenge, often achieving more than expected for a small, academically rigorous school.

Under Bessolo's leadership, University High School Basketball has become known not only for its success on the court, but also for developing confident, connected, and resilient young men who carry the lessons of the program long after graduation.

Henry Gunn has been a dedicated leader in San Francisco softball for more than 15 years. He began coaching with San Francisco Little League (SFLL) in 2009 and served as the league's Softball Commissioner from 2010 to 2016. During his tenure, he helped grow the softball program from just two teams and 24 players to more than 15 teams serving over 200 participants. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he was named SFLL Softball Coach of the Year in 2014.

In 2012, Gunn founded the San Francisco Waves travel softball program and managed the organization through 2025, creating opportunities for countless athletes to compete and continue their development. He also served as an umpire for SFLL softball games from 2016 to 2018, demonstrating his commitment to supporting the game both on and off the field.

Gunn joined University High School as an assistant softball coach in 2020 and was promoted to Head Coach in 2022. At UHS, he values coaching student-athletes who are teachable, respectful, and supportive of one another. He takes particular pride in the team's culture, where experienced players help mentor younger teammates and foster an inclusive environment that encourages everyone to grow and contribute.

His coaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that softball is about more than developing athletic skills. He sees sports as an opportunity to build character, strengthen teamwork, and teach life lessons that extend far beyond the field. For Gunn, one of the most rewarding aspects of coaching is watching players grow in confidence, leadership, and maturity over the course of their high school careers.

Outside of softball, Gunn enjoys adventure and new experiences. Whether it's zip-lining, riding ATVs, or participating in a "Top Gun" dogfight experience with his father for Father's Day, he brings the same sense of enthusiasm and curiosity to life that he encourages in his players.

Britton Stuart joined University High School in 2023 as the Head Coach and Director of Lacrosse. In 2025, he led the Red Devils to the program’s first CIF North Coast Section (NCS) Division II Championship.

Stuart graduated from Georgetown University in 2007, where he was a three-time captain of the Georgetown Club Lacrosse team. He helped lead the team to its first NCLL Division I playoff appearance and was named an NCLL Division I All-Star in 2006 and 2007.

Coach Smith holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Performance and a Master’s in Sports Management with an emphasis in Sports Psychology. She competed at the NCAA level for both Notre Dame and Princeton, and began coaching at Halberstadt and Piedmont Fencing Club.

Before and alongside her coaching career at UHS, Smith worked in real estate and strategic investing, where she developed the same focus on discipline, planning, and problem-solving that she brings to coaching.

Since joining UHS, she has helped lead one of the program’s most successful stretches, including the 2024–2026 Girls League Championship, Boys League Championship, and Overall All-City Championship seasons. The program has also built a strong culture of giving back through student-led efforts supporting local fencing programs with equipment and lessons.

Smith coaches fencing as both a sport and a way of thinking. Her practices focus on fundamentals, strategy, and decision-making, helping athletes stay composed, think clearly, and compete with confidence.

At UHS, her goal is simple: build a strong team, challenge athletes daily, and create an environment where students grow on and off the strip.
