We know that deep learning depends upon a rich diversity of backgrounds and perspectives in each classroom, yet we remain too “need aware” in our admission practices. By increasing our financial and cultural capacity to support every qualified student, we will be closer to achieving our mission.
As the cost of living in the Bay Area has skyrocketed, the number of families requiring financial aid has also increased. As part of our strategic design, we have broadened our reach and recruitment to ensure the most diverse and talented applicant pool. This year alone our incoming class represents 59 different zip codes. Although we are immensely proud of the cohort of students we are able to build from this remarkable applicant pool, every admissions season also confronts us with wrenching decisions about which compelling candidates we will have to deny because we cannot provide them sufficient financial aid. We seek funding that will solidify and expand our financial aid commitment in three ways:
- Endowing the Educational Promise scholarship that provides full financial aid to 1-2 Summerbridge students who are admitted to and enroll at UHS each year
- Endowing financial aid dollars to ensure that we can continue dedicating the same amount of funds to supporting our students and their families
- Expanding immediate-use financial aid dollars at the disposal of our admissions team while each endowment builds
