Challenges in recruiting and retaining excellent faculty have reached crisis levels across the country, and independent schools are not immune to the fierce competition for talent. We believe that the faculty at UHS are our most valuable asset, and that aggressively investing in their well-being will continue to have a far-reaching and exceedingly beneficial impact on the school’s curriculum, student experience, and culture.
Sabbaticals have been underwritten with UHS’ general operating funds since the beginning—regularly given the “green light” but always subject to annual budget review and approval. In moments like the 2008-09 recession difficult choices affecting nearly every aspect of the school had to be made including a hiatus for the sabbaticals that deeply affected faculty morale. Though we were able to reinstate sabbaticals in 2010 we feel a particular urgency to protect this key program that allows us to support our faculty in the face of an increasingly expensive Bay Area living.
