Signature Programs

At UHS, we believe that learning is an active, collaborative experience where students are encouraged to lean into the challenges facing our world.

Our signature programs serve as a vehicle for this exploration, providing the space for students to be the architects of their own education. Grounded in our core values of inquiry, integrity, care, agency, and interconnection, these initiatives empower students to pursue a "purpose larger than self" while developing the confidence to navigate their high school journey and beyond.

Through these Signature Programs, students find many ways to explore, learn, grow, and thrive.

Breakthrough Summerbridge

An integral part of our commitment to interconnection , this program epitomizes our dedication to educational equity and the belief in the promise of every student.

Civilization & the Arts

Since the founding of UHS, Civ has served as the cornerstone of the Humanities program, examining the transcultural relationship between the west and the world.

Independent Study

A hallmark of student agency where over 60% of students —including more than 100 students each year —embark on a semester-long journey of inquiry guided by expert faculty, culminating in our bi-annual Independent Study Symposium.

Responsive Education (REd)

The Institute for Responsive Education (REd): A four-year curriculum centered on Metacognition, Health & Wellness, and Ethnic Studies to cultivate a learning environment where identity is honored and relational learning is embraced.

Social Impact

Built on our fundamental belief in collective responsibility, students learn to serve the broader community through leadership and engagement programs that reflect our identity as a school "in and of the San Francisco Bay Area."

Professional Artist Series

Curated showings of work by professional artists from around the Bay Area offer students the opportunity to learn first-hand from visual artists working in the field.
