Our Program

Lorem Ipsum Dolor

Breakthrough Summerbridge is a summer and after-school academic enrichment program. Students attend our six-week summer session over three consecutive summers and spend two years in our After-School Enrichment (ASE). During the summer, students take classes in math, humanities, and science, grade level co-curricular classes, and numerous non-academic electives (including the arts and athletics). Our school-year programming features academic enrichment courses, high school advising, and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) workshops for parents.

summer program

The Breakthrough Summerbridge Summer Program is a six-week, full-time, academic program held at the University High School campus. Students spend three summers gaining the skills necessary for success in a rigorous college preparatory high school.

Students at Breakthrough Summerbridge have an exciting routine during the summer! They take humanities, science, and math academic courses in the mornings. In the afternoons, students take non-academic courses which include:

  • Study hall to build strong studying and executive function habits
  • Social emotional learning to support our students in developing healthy identities, maintaining positive relationships, making responsible decisions, and more
  • Electives which may include art, dance, theater, music, and sports!
  • Co-curricular courses to build on important skills by grade. Our rising 7th graders learn executive functioning skills, our rising 8th graders take high school advising to prepare for the following year’s high school applications, and our rising 9th graders take introduction to college readiness to prepare them for our College Access Program (see below)

Our academic and elective courses are instructed by our Teaching Fellows who are ambitious high school and college students dedicated to the importance of education. Our Teaching Fellows are supported by Instructional Coaches, who are experienced full-time school year teachers.

When our students are not in class, they participate in a variety of activities that build community and celebrate their strengths and achievements! Every Friday, we take a break from classes and have an event day. These include the Olympics, our annual field day; the Talent Show, an opportunity for students to share their special interests in the performing arts; College and Career Day, where students take field trips to various local colleges or businesses. Celebration, our culminating event, comes at the end of the summer and is an evening filled with student performances, speeches, and displays of art and academic work.

Finally, our students revel in simply being a member of the Breakthrough Summerbridge community. All-School Meetings allow the students, teachers, and administrators to gather for skits; cheers; announcements; celebrations of birthdays; and the presentation of the coveted "Spirit Stick," a symbol of scholastic achievement, leadership, and community contributions.

After-School Program

Breakthrough Summerbridge provides academic enrichment courses to our students during their 7th and 8th-grade school years with our required weekly After-School Enrichment (ASE) program. During ASE, students take the following courses:

  • Project Based Learning classes that further student’s literacy and STEM skills taught by UHS students trained in teaching and learning practices
  • High School Advising (HSA) classes that build skills in preparation for high school applications (see High School Advising below)
  • Financial literacy and executive function classes with hands-on and interactive lessons that teach valuable life skills

COLLEGE ACCESS program

The College Access Program (CAP) is a four-year college access enrichment program that broadens access to information and resources regarding college admissions for BTSB students who have successfully completed our middle school program. CAP works directly with students and families as an additional resource for college preparedness and admissions.

CAP provides the foundational information and support needed for success in the college admissions process. We provide support for our students to pursue academic enrichment activities, prepare for college entrance exams (SAT/ACT), tour colleges of interest, successfully complete college applications, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and more! Students are required to attend all mandatory programming for the College Access Program, which includes Saturday workshops, evening panels, and college visits.

Homework Help

Breakthrough Summerbridge offers all our students optional weekly tutoring through our Homework Help program. Students work one-on-one with our tutors who are UHS student volunteers trained to support with homework and provide additional academic enrichment activities.

Summerbridge family association

Breakthrough Summerbridge strongly values family involvement in our program, and holds four required Summerbridge Family Association (SBFA) meetings per year. These meetings consist of opportunities for community building, high school advising education, parent/guardian empowerment, and social emotional learning.

High School Advising

Breakthrough Summerbridge provides high school advising to our middle school students and parents/guardians in preparation for high school applications for private, public, and charter/parochial high schools.

Students will take a High School Advising (HSA) course starting the spring semester of 7th-grade through the end of their 8th-grade year. Families will be supported through one on one meetings with professional staff, hands-on parent workshops, and the HSA course during ASE.
